Information & Referral: Ask Lara!

Q: How do I select the right car seat for a child with disabilities?

A: All young children need to be in properly fitted car seats; however, special consideration needs to be taken for children with special needs. The right seat will depend on the nature of the disability and the child’s age and size.

The American Academy of Pediatrics publishes information for parents on transporting children with special needs and a chart outlining product information for different types of car seats. They also publish Policy Statements on transporting children with special needs, safe transportation of premature and low birth weight infants, and school bus transportation.

The Automotive Safety Program at Riley Hospital has long been a national leader and expert in transportation of children with special health care. View their information on special needs transportation.

Easter Seals/Goodwill of Central Ohio sponsors the Ohio Kids are Riding Safe Program that includes a website with information for parents, health care professionals, school personnel and child passenger safety technicians on choosing the correct car safety seat for a child with special needs.
