Q: Our affiliate would like to develop some educational materials but do not know how or where to start; what should we do?
A: I would like to share a tool that was developed by the Genetic Alliance and other partners with funding from the Centers for Disease Control. The tool, "Trust It or Trash It" is a quality assessment tool that health professionals can use to judge the quality of currently available educational materials and to assist in creation of new quality educational materials. The tool focuses on three measures--content, quality and usability, and it provides numerous examples of what to consider in these three areas when developing materials. There is also an abridged version of the tool that provides a quick guide to help individuals think critically about the quality of educational materials they read whether it be a brochure, fact sheet or Web site.
